IGI is now accepting applications for fellowships that support language learning and research.

  • The Graduate Language Fellowship provides University of Illinois graduate students at the MA or PhD level with support for language training needed to conduct research or to meet other professional development needs. The fellowship offers a $22,000 stipend for academic year 2026-2027.  As cultural and language training go hand in hand, fellows will be required to take one language course and one relevant area studies course each semester that they hold a fellowship. Applications are due by 11: 59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026. Full details on the IGI Graduate Language Fellowship
  • IGI Summer Research Fellowships provides up to $3,500 to support research travel outside of the United States. The aim of the award is to support seed research contributing to the development of a dissertation or thesis project that draws on international research. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026. The Language Fellowship was previously opened for languages and to centers that did not have FLAS. We reworked it a bit and it now includes applications through all of the centers who want to participate (listed on the webpage).

The summer research fellowship is new. Again, participating centers are listed on the webpage.
