Biography
Saliwe Kawewe, Ph.D., M.S.W., B.S.W. Dr. Kawewe is a professor and a former Director of the School of Social Work. Prior to this, she has had experience as Graduate Program Director.
She has been a faculty member at SIU since 1996. Dr. Kawewe obtained her Ph.D. from Saint Louis University in 1985; an M.S.W. from Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in Saint Louis in 1979; and a B.S.W. from the University of Zambia in 1974.
Dr. Kawewe’s background experience is diverse and entails working in university administration in Zambia, social work practice as a Social Services Worker and Probation Officer in Zimbabwe; and in Child Welfare/ Protective Family Services in foster Care in the U.S.A. Dr. Kawewe has a commendable record of scholarship and has been recognized with numerous academic awards and honors for teaching effectiveness, community organization and professional service. In addition to publishing over 50 publications including refereed articles, chapters and proceedings, Dr. Kawewe has attended numerous professional conferences and has made over 75 local, national and international presentations combined in the U.S., the Caribbean Islands, Asia, Europe, and Africa. She has been consulting editor for the Journal of Social Development Issues; and manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Social Work Education (J.S.W.E.); British Journal of Social Work; Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Services; Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare; Open Social Science Journal; Journal of Language and Culture; and Gender and Development; and Advances in Social Work. She has also served on the editorial boards of the National Women Studies Association Journal: N.W.S.A., Journal of African Policy Studies; Journal of Women and Language; New Global Development: Journal of International and Comparative Social Welfare (now the Journal of Comparative Social Welfare). She is a regular reviewer of various book proposals and manuscripts for numerous textbook book publishers. Since 2007, Dr. Kawewe has been a regular Conference Proposal Reviewer for the Council on Social Work Education (C .S.W.E.) Annual Program Meetings’ tracks such as Cultural Competence; Child Welfare; Violence against Women and Their Children; Social and Economic Justice; International Issues; Refugees and Displaced Persons; African Americans and the African Diaspora; Clinical Practice; Feminist Scholarship; Community Organization and Administration.
