Illinois Scholars at Risk Program

Over the past few years, the world has faced a sustained period of global challenges, political turmoil, and natural disasters that have dramatically impacted the ability for our international colleagues to engage in scholarly pursuits within their own countries. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is now a sustaining member of Scholars at Risk (SAR), an international network of higher education institutions and associations dedicated to protecting scholars and promoting academic freedom around the world. UIUC is now a Commitment Partner with The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF). For more information, click here. Through our partnership with SAR and IIE-SRF, Illinois has committed to supporting scholars who are facing severe threats to their lives, freedoms, and well-being.

The Office of the Provost has charged the Illinois Scholars at Risk Committee (ISAR) with overseeing the process of matching departments interested in hosting with a scholar at risk for a year-long visit. For a text of the charge letter, click here. Departments may nominate a scholar at risk they have already identified. The ISAR team will also provide interested departments with a database of scholars from which to review candidates. The university has made available matching funds to support departmental and college efforts.
