ARTH 510: Seminar in Art

This course offers comparative perspectives of the urban and commercial history of the African Atlantic and East African Indian Ocean worlds from c. 1000 C.E to c. 1870 through artifacts and material goods. We will examine religious artifacts, trade commodities and architectural forms and their spiritual, commercial and political values and as sources of power and social interaction and exchange. While this course emphasizes the antecedents of Atlantic and Indian Ocean commerce, we will examine how Africans negotiated debt economies and co-produced new forms of market-oriented value systems in the global economy prior to European colonization in the late nineteenth century.
